Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of the gates of Paradise and Hell within Islamic and mystical traditions, with particular emphasis on their Qur’anic, Prophetic, exegetical, and spiritual dimensions. The study is grounded in the Qur’anic passages that explicitly describe the seven gates of Hell, the opening of the gates of Paradise and Hell, and the open gates of the Gardens of Eternity. It further examines the Prophetic traditions that establish eight gates of Paradise, identify Bāb al-Rayyān for those who fast, and associate Bāb al-Ṣalāh, Bāb al-Jihād, Bāb al-Ṣadaqah, and Bāb al-Rayyān with specific forms of righteous conduct. Drawing upon the interpretations of al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Zamakhsharī, and Ibn ʿĀshūr, the article analyzes the linguistic, theological, rhetorical, and eschatological significance of these gates. It also considers the mystical dimension through al-Ghazālī’s discourse on purification of the soul and Ibn ʿArabī’s symbolic and spiritual readings. The study argues that the gates of Paradise and Hell are genuine eschatological realities established by revelation, while their descriptions also communicate a profound moral and spiritual structure connecting faith, action, accountability, divine mercy, and divine justice. Accordingly, the gates function not merely as eschatological entrances but as a theological and ethical framework through which Islamic thought relates outward religious practice to inward spiritual transformation and ultimate destiny.
